Thu, 23. Nov 2023, 19:30-21:00 CANCELED! Belonging and Possession. Or: Why Longitude and Latitude need each other in Israel and Palestine Online Lecture by Sari Nusseibeh (Jerusalem/Al Quds) in English - followed by a discussion with Hanno Loewy (Hohenems)

An event of the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue and the Jewish Museum Hohenems. Unfortunately, the event has to be postponed due to illness and will probably take place next year. At the symposium “Martin Buber and His Legacy”, organized by the Israeli Academy of Science and Letters in January 2023, Sari Nusseibeh discussed his philosophical analysis of the verbs “to belong” and “to possess”. What can become a theoretical question is a most loaded one – in the context of the “situation”, the fact that Israel-Palestine is inhabited by two people in one land, being attached to the same meaningful sites and cities. Israelis and Palestinians at the same time “belong”, in different ways indeed, to conceptual frameworks that both go far beyond the immediate territory on stake. Taking his reflection on Buber as a starting point in his talk in Hohenems Sari Nusseibeh will further reflect his ideas on this complicated pattern of different “belongings”. Sari Nusseibeh, born 1949 in Damaskus, grew up in East-Jerusalem. He studied in Oxford and Harvard, where he did his PhD in Islamic Philosophy. He became Professor for Philosophy at Al-Quds University in East-Jerusalem, serving as its president from 1995 to 2014. 2010 he received, together with Amos Oz, the Siegfried Unseld Prize. Apart from his academic career his was active as a politician and a writer. His publications include his autobiography „Once Upon a Country. A Palestinian Life“ (2009) and his self-critical renunciation oft he dreams of a „two-state solution“ in „What is a Palestinian State worth?“ (2012). 2016 he published his seminal work on „The Story of Reason in Islam“.
