Di, 09. Jul 2024, 19:00-20:30 Uhr Radical Jews. Post-1967 American Zionism and the Settler Movement Vortrag von Dr. Sara Yael Hirschhorn (Jerusalem/Haifa) im Rahmen der Sommeruniversität 2024 (auf Englisch)

Sara Yael Hirschhorn examines trends in Jewish-American radicalism from the 1960s and onward both at home in the United States and abroad in Israel. As a generation of young American Jews found it increasingly difficult to square the circle between their universalist and particularist commitments after the 1967 War, particularly within the world of progressive activism, they made choices that they believed allowed them to apply their radical backgrounds to their future activities. For a small cohort, this meant decamping for Israel — and eventually over the Green Line — where they served as leaders and cadres within the Israeli settler movement and brought the discourses and tactics of their USA activism to their new roles. For the vast majority who remained in America/“Amerika,“ it meant reinventing Jewish and Zionist traditions in a new world of identity politics and polarization, a first iteration of the debates we are seeing after 10/7. While many radicals were Jews and some Jews were radicals, this lecture attempts to understand „Jewish radicalism“ and „Jewish liberalism“ as unique phenomena that have had a profound influence on American/Jewish and Israeli contemporary history. Sara Yael Hirschhorn is currently Visiting Professor at the Ruderman Program in American Jewish Studies and Senior Researcher at the Comper Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism and Racism at the University of Haifa. She is also a ’22-’24 inaugural fellow at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Center for Antisemitism Research and a fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute. She was previously appointed as the Visiting Assistant Professor in Israel Studies at Northwestern University (2018-2022) and the University Research Lecturer in Israel Studies at the University of Oxford (2013-2018). Her research, teaching, and public engagement activities focus on Diaspora-Israel relations, the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, and the Israeli Ultranationalist Movement. Her first book, City on a Hilltop. Amercan jews and the Israeli Settler Movement (Harvard, 2017), was the winner of the 2018 Sami Rohr Prize in Jewish Literature Choice Award and a finalist for the 2017 National Jewish Book Award. She is currently working on a new manuscript entitled „New Day in Babylon and Jerusalem: Zionism, Jewish Power, and Identity Politics Since 1967,“ that will offer a transnational history of the post-Six Day War period. Apart from her academic work, Dr. Hirschhorn is an internationally-recognized public speaker, writer, educator, media commentator, and consultant on contemporary Jewish/Israel affairs.
