The Mythical Jew: Variations on a European Fiction
Öffentlicher Vortrag von Dr. Brian Klug (London), auf Englisch, im Rahmen der Sommeruniversität 2022 When is a Jew not a Jew? In the European ‘gaze’, paradoxically, it is precisely when Jews are seen as Jews that they cease to be Jews. That is to say, they cease to be real and become illusory. The lecture sets out to resolve this paradox by scrutinising the European ‘gaze’, examining various ways in which Jews have been construed in different European contexts. A key moment is Rome’s conversion to Christianity in the fourth-century. With this event, Jews cease to be just another minority; for Judaism, or a certain image of Judaism, is intimately present to Christianity’s idea of itself. Over the centuries, as Europe’s identity mutates, so does the fiction of the Jew. But the status of Jews as ‘internal other’ in the very constitution of Europe remains constant – even when Jews are valorised. As we shall see, antisemitism and philosemitism meet in the mythical Jew. When, then, is a Jew a Jew?
