Muhammad Jabali, an Artist, Writer, Illustrator, and a DJ will give a talk on the dynamics between western dance spaces and oriental music tunes in contemporary dance music scene. How did muslim immigration to Europe affect the acceptance of Oriental music in the Israeli music scene? Is there a difference between dance music and folk music? whats wrong with the category of World Music? How would we categorize Turkish Psychedelic Rock music? Oriental or Western? Is Afro-American Music a Western Music? Is there something Universal about music? We will share thoughts and hear music samples that will try to give a new way of thinking about the dialectics of music, culture, identity, modernity, and pleasure. Following the talk we will experience a nightlife dance music DJ Set that combines East with West, South with North, and treats all music as a folk music. Come have a Blast!
