The Sages of Aschkenas and Austria: Rabbinical Networks in the Late Middle Ages
Lecture by Martha Keil, Vienna (in German) In the Middle Ages too rabbis were not secluded in an ivory tower. All facets of life of the community, of families and individuals were ruled by the Halacha, the Jewish law. So there was almost no privat nor public sphere that was shut from the rabbi’s possible intervention. Issues and legal cases though were settled in disputes and consulting of colleagues. And this in networks crossing borders that did not only involve family relations and master-scholar-relations. Questions of Jewsh law (sche’elot) and answers (teschuwot, responses) connected Aschkenas and Austria from Speyer to Vienna, from Erfurt to Prague, from Mainz to Wiener Neustadt. |
