With the family in the museum
Discover our museum together!

The Jewish Museum Hohenems offers a wide range of activities for children and families: a separate children’s exhibition parallel to the permanent exhibition of the museum, a family backpack for a walk in the Jewish quarter – and those who want to linger in the café will find all kinds of entertainment in the family box.

On three Sundays in summer, the JMH invites you to “Destination Museum” – a special programme awaits all young museum visitors on every first Sunday in July, August and September!

Children’s exhibition at the museumEnjoy our exhibition tour together with your children!
20 pictures and stories are hidden in the showcases of the permanent exhibition, waiting to be made to glow. When the light switches are pressed, the boxes illuminate and short stories come to light. They are illustrated by fascinating silhouettes.
The stories in the children’s exhibition were written by the Hohenems writer Monika Helfer. They tell of the Jewish community of Hohenems, spanning an arc from its beginning to the present. Some of the short stories are fictional, but all of them are related to real history, which is presented in the permanent exhibition. The Berlin artist Barbara Steinitz is responsible for the artistic silhouettes, each of which depicts a scene from the story.
For those who cannot yet read or prefer to listen, the stories can also be heard on our audio device (German/English/French). These can be borrowed free of charge at the museum reception.

Family boxA box for do-it-yourselfers
Before or after your visit to the museum or the walk through the Jewish Quarter, the museum café invites you to linger. For children, the family box is available for entertainment: it contains everything you need to get started and make your own simple silhouette. If you like, you can also take home a postcard with a motif by Barbara Steinitz. And by answering a short questionnaire, you can win a free visit to the museum for the whole family!

Hidden Things in the Jewish Quarter

Discovering the Jewish Quarter with a backpack.

Families can borrow a free discovery backpack at the museum reception. Equipped with it, they can set out on their own, the illustrated map of the Jewish Quarter providing orientation. On the way through the former Jewish quarter, the objects from the backpack and many senses are used – listening, looking, smelling and tasting. What do the letters on the wall of the museum mean? What can be discovered through binoculars?
An accompanying booklet provides answers to open questions and then also leads to matching objects in the museum’s permanent exhibition.
