The Female Side of God
Opening of the Special Exhibiton Welcome Jutta Berger – Association for the Promotion of the Jewish Museum Hohenems, Bregenz Opening Speech Rabbinerin Bea Wyler, Wettingen Introduction Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek – curator, Vienna Michaela Feurstein-Prasser – curator, Vienna In 2017, the Jewish Museum Hohenems poses a challenging question to the monotheistic religions: Is it possible to view the—according to Jewish, Christian, and Muslim tradition—“one and only God” as other than male? The exhibition “The Female Aspect of God” takes a critical look back at the sources that generated the notion of the one God as well as at traditional images of the female in religious tradition. It uncovers hidden and suppressed traditions of alternative conceptions of the divine: in the Hebrew Bible and in mysticism, in the practice of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim women, and in female artists’ works that push the boundaries of established images of gender and holiness. An exhibition of the Jewish Museum Hohenems in collaboration with the Museum of the Bible, Washington, and the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, Curator: Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek and Michaela Feurstein-Prasser (xhibit.at) |
